It is often said that Germany is one Europe’s most unsung and understated countries in Europe. To an extent this is true. While its neighbours France to the west and Austria and Switzerland to the south had a head start in the tourism race during the post-war years, Germany’s resurgence since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 has been nothing short of remarkable. The bringing together of the two Germany’s, who had previously spent the best part of half a century engaged in a socio-political stand off with one another, was a significant turning point for the country. Today, Germany is one of the powerhouses of the world economy and its stock as a destination of choice for overseas workers keeps rising. With a population of 80.6 million, Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe, second only to Russia. As well as having the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, it also has the lowest levels of unemployment too. Which is good news for job seekers. The job market in Germany remains strong with high employment opportunities for overseas workers coming into the country, especially those with certain skill sets and qualifications. This is a highly industrialised country with much of the demand to be found in the engineering, manufacturing and IT and telecom sectors. But professionals in certain other fields are highly sought after, including education, healthcare, professional and support services.
